With a clinic in South Portland, Maine, we serve patients managing long-term medications or recovering from surgery, and primary care physicians, surgeons, and healthcare providers seeking expert tapering support.

A Proven Solution for a Pressing Need
When co-founder Kjartan Thorsson was working at the orthopedic surgery ward in Reykjavik, he noticed a troubling pattern: patients arrived for routine procedures — and many needed opioids prescribed on discharge, exposing them to significant risk of developing dependency. The resources to help them simply didn't exist.
Prescriby Health was born in 2020, and soon Johannes Torfason joined the team where the two founders formed a care model involving technology and specialized care, a model that made tapering treatments a realistic and reliable choice. They called it an "upstream" approach: where people could safely taper off medications that could be causing them harm.
Helping patients taper down after surgery or to get off medication they had been using for years, the model works. Iceland's Ministry of Health took notice and partnered with Prescriby for a nationwide rollout. Now, with proven outcomes and close to a thousand patients helped, Prescriby Health is bringing this approach to the United States, starting in Portland, Maine.
